Signs of Life II

There are people in the world who never open a Bible. Still, they are forming impressions about God every time they meet a Christian. You may be the only Bible that someone will read. It is therefore important to make the right impression.

Please read Matthew 5:13-16.

We have interrupted a big teaching block in Matthew’s gospel. From chapter 5 through to the end of chapter 7 we have what has become known as The Sermon on the Mount.

What is the big theme of verses 13 to 16?

Jesus uses two vivid metaphors to describe the Christian: salt and light.

Salt

Brainstorm some uses of salt. What do these uses tell us about the Christian’s role in society?

What has been in the news lately that indicates society is rotting and decaying?

Without any doubt Jesus says that his disciples are the salt of the earth. But what warning does he give them? What do you think this means?

What are some of the practical ways we can function as salt where we live and work?

Light

Brainstorm some different uses of light. What do these uses tell us about the Christian’s role in society?

What connection is there between Jesus and the Christian?

(See also John 1:1-5; 8:12)

In verses 14 and 15 Jesus gives us two illustrations connected with light. Try and explain them in your own words.

Why might we be tempted to hide our light?

How, in practice, can we act as light?

Sometimes people quote these words from Francis of Assisi: ‘Preach the Gospel; if necessary use words’. Is this what verse 16 is teaching?

(See also James 2:14-19)

What is the result, according to Jesus, of people seeing our good deeds?

Please read Matthew 7:24-27.

What must we do as a result of this study? What happens if we don’t?
